Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear is actually part of the expansion pack for the previous Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition. Produced by Overhaul Games and Beamdog, it’s due to come out at the end of this month, and is highly anticipated in some circles. Word on the street is that Siege of Dragonspear will bring as much as 25 hours of gameplay. Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear will be available for several platforms: iOS, Linux, Windows, PC, and Android, to name some of them. It is a role-playing game and will have single or multi-player capability.
Siege of Dragonspear, or SoD, really serves as a connecting story between events that transpired in Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition II. The entire saga of the Baldur’s Gate franchise, called Bhaalspawn, began several years ago as a part of the Forbidden Realms Dungeons and Dragons game. A series of company changes led to the long break between game releases. Things should settle down now that Beamdog has been given some licensing rights to develop more games. SoD was previously referred to as “Adventure Y”, with “Adventure Z” to soon follow.
So Baldur’s Gate: Siege of Dragonspear takes place in the region north of the city Baldur’s Gate. The Shining Lady, a previously unknown warrior, leads this quest into the wilderness. Characters that players became familiar with in Baldur’s Gate will be utilized in SoD, making it a smooth transition from game to game. Baldur’s Gate Spoiler Alert: at the end of Baldur’s Gate, Sarevok was defeated. Events in SoD take place right after that defeat, and clarify the previously alluded to “circumstances much darker than anyone would have thought”. SoD will give clarity to that statement, as well as introduce a shaman summoning class and four new traveling companions.
There’s a huge fan following of Baldur’s Gate, as evidenced by the forums where fans and players can talk endlessly about different aspects of the game. Also the Collector’s Edition of Siege of Dragonspear is available for pre-order for 129.99 US$. Games don’t sell like that unless they’re incredibly popular. Considering that Baldur’s Gate came out in 1998, there’s been a lot of time for the game to gain traction and popularity.
With YouTube videos, Twitch and numerous forums, there is no shortage of resources for learning how to best conquer Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition and get a leg up on Siege of Dragonspear once it comes out on March 31. Good luck.
